Dr. Harry J. Sobel is a licensed clinical psychologist, practicing in Newburyport, MA, where he consults with individual clients, couples, and leaders from business.  

Dr. Sobel was a co-founder, investor and eventually the President of S&R Associates, Inc., a human resources, leadership development, and organizational consulting firm. The company provided employee assistance programs nationally, executive/managerial assessments, leadership coaching, team interventions, organizational development, training, and conflict management services.   The company was founded in 1989, evolved into one of the leading HR and EAP firms in New England and was sold in October, 2011 to a NY private equity firm, creating E4 Health, Inc.  Dr. Sobel remained as a psychologist and Senior Vice President with E4 Health until December, 2013.  

Harry Sobel holds a B.A. from Lehigh University, a Master’s from Purdue and a Ph.D. in psychology from Boston College. He completed his internship and post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, where he eventually accepted a full time position in the Department of Psychiatry, MGH, specializing in behavioral medicine   He also was a member of the Project Omega team at MGH, where he worked with cancer patients and their families.

Over the past 30 years, Dr. Sobel has personally consulted to over 250 organizations, counseled their employees/family members,  and worked with management teams at places such as Harvard University, CVS, Staples, Whole Foods Market, FM Global, American Association for the Advancement of Science, Citizens Bank, IDEXX Labs, Blue Cross/Blue Shield and dozens of other organizations. 

He has held clinical, research and teaching positions at Brown University’s Department of Behavioral Medicine, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston College, Miriam Hospital in Providence, and Harvard Medical School. From 1981-1985 he hosted a daily, issues-oriented talk show on WRKO Boston which received national acclaim. 

In addition to his published articles, consultation activities, psychotherapy work with clients and couples, Dr. Sobel has conducted over 600 seminars, invited addresses, and workshops, has coached high potential young leaders, and worked personally with dozens of senior leaders. He has been a faculty resource to the Young President’s Organization and a Board member of the Brain Tumor Society, Tri-Travel, Inc., as well as the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America. In recent years he has been actively involved with T2 Biosystems, and Loxo Oncology. 

Dr. Sobel has two grown daughters and resides with his wife Anne in Newburyport, MA. His interests include long distance biking, downhill skiing, writing, cooking, hiking, and travel. Currently he volunteers for Our Neighbor’s Table, and serves as the Executive Trustee for The Dr. Ward J. Cromer Charitable Trust.
